With the US government currently shut down, we figured a letter from the President might be in order:
Fellow riders,
The end of the season is rapidly approaching and so far it has been an amazing year for SORCE and the Surrey riding community.
Our Parks:
South Surrey Bike Park:
Thanks to the tireless efforts of Vince Saumuels and Peter Falizsewski the new flow trail at SSBP is almost complete and absolutely the most fun a person can have on two wheels. With the fall weather approaching trail building season is now upon us, trail days coming soon.
We are also currently working on a plan with the city to try and revitalize the large set of jumps and the pumptrack in the DJ area, construction is tentatively set for mid to late october, more updates coming soon... read more...
Port Kells Dirt Jumps:
Thanks to the of the Denis at North Operations dept. we were able to get an excavator out at the port kells dj's to revamp the jumps and build a small pumptrack. Thanks to Derek Kost for guiding the machine and laying out the jumps. We are still looking for an individual to really step up and make this spot their own, so it can continue to thrive and develop in the coming years.
Invergarry Bike Park:
Following the great success we had in developing this park into a real city sponsored bike park last year, the city of Surrey has been kind enough to provided us with a significant budget to complete several areas of the park. Given we had the appropriate funding we were able to hire alpine bike parks to complete the design and construction of these facility upgrades. The upgrades will consist of the completion of the "shovel buster" flow trail and construction of a kids flow trail, so we can get more young rippers out and honing their skills. Construction is slated to start early october, we will be looking for lots of help during this construction process and will be posting regular dig days. This will be a great opportunity for you aspiring trail builders, to have the chance to build trails with the likes of Jordie Lunn and Justin Wyper.
Cloverdale Bike Park:
While cloverdale bike park didn't receive much attention this year, we are actively looking for a local resident to work with on formulating a plan that will suit the needs of the riders in the area, that we could implement at the beginning of next season.
Latimer Lake (stokes pit):
Early this year Derek Kost and I went for a ride on the trails at Latimer Lake/Stokes pit and we were impressed with what was left. True the days of log rides and ladder drops are gone for this spot but the terrain and trails are still just waiting to be revitalized and brought back into action. I feel that it is important for us as a club to maintain and make the most use of any riding area the city is willing to provide us and that the more trails we have the better. If anyone is interested in working with SORCE and the City of Surrey to help bring these trails back to life please contact us and let us know.
Holly Park in Ladner:
While this is not a SORCE project I feel it is worth mentioning that our friends at the Shed Bike Club have been working with the Corporation of Delta on a Pumptrack/DJ area at Holly Park in Ladner. The park is slated to be complete by next spring as it is being built entirely with volunteer labour. Hooray for more bike parks!!!
Events:
XC Twoonie Race series:
Having never run a twoonie race series before I had no idea what to expect. What we got was an awesome time, great turn outs, fun courses, cool prizes, good food and even better sponsors made these races a great excuse to get out as a club and have a great time. Thanks to everyone who volunteered and participated. Don't forget the final race for the year is on October 20th at the Delta Watershed I think this will be the best of the year so I hope to see everyone there.
Invergarry Pumptrack Races:
This was definitely a year of firsts including the pumptrack races at invergarry. This was also a surprisingly easy and successful event. The highlight for me (other than winning the first race :) ) was how many young riders came out for the kids race and had a great time. Thanks again to all the volunteers that helped make this event happen, and be sure to look for these races next year.
IMBA Trail Care Crew:
At the beginning of the summer we had the good fortune of being selected for a visit from the IMBA Canada Trail Care Crew. This visit was very informative and productive for the club and has been a great help in us further improving the structure of SORCE and ways to make the club more effective and most importantly more fun! Big thanks to AJ and Rachel from IMBA !
Invergarry Tree Planting:
Oct 12, SORCE and the City of Surrey will be hosting a tree planting day, we will need 10-12 volunteers for this project and would really appreciate some SORCE members coming out to show we care about our forests as much as our trails. More info and event posting coming soon.
SORCE 2013 AGM TBA:
SORCE will be hosting its annual agm this november towards the end of the month. We really need some people to step up and fill in some of the blanks so we can have more events, more trails and more riding. Once the date has been confirmed there will be an event posting with all the details. At the bottom of this letter I have included a list of positions and volunteer opportunities with SORCE, please take a moment and see if you fit the bill to help us make riding in Surrey better for everyone.
That's all for now, thanks to everyone for all their help this year,
Jordan Proctor
